Khalid, I'd avoid the chalk basselet. I had 3 in a 40 cube and they got pretty big and aggressive. Love the other choices. I think that anthias are a bit hit and miss but do add a lot if color and movement. I want to do something similar to Andrew when I get the new tank going. (Plus another tang, off topic sorry)

That makes 2 people that have warned me against the basslet. ;)

So I've had him in my 28g cube for over a year...I've seen a couple that are slightly larger than him, but he's pretty close to maxing out in size. My angel pestered him to the point that he hid in a corner for the week before I removed the angel, and he currently gets pushed around by both of my wrasses, and even the diamond goby sometimes chases him away from his area of the tank. I'm hoping that he behaves...he's definitely fairly timid compared to what I've heard about them. I'd consider skipping him on this build, but he's the one fish that my girlfriend picked out when I started my first reef, so that wouldn't go over too well, haha. Say a little prayer for me, hopefully he does OK. :torn:

Khalis, awesome build and progress oh patient jedi master...learning tons on how to "do it right" when i start over...
Lol, thanks. I learned from my mistakes with my first build, and I rushed into things a little too quickly on the nano I put together after that. I'm hoping the slow start pays off on this build.

The new fish are being acclimated...it's so convenient being able to float the bag in the sump and drip acclimate from the DT.

The water change this morning didn't go as smoothly as I hoped, but I got it done. I need to replace the fitting on the drain so that it fits the hose I bought...thought the fitting was 5/8" but it's 3/4"...woops. I also hooked up my TLF reactor to an MJ600 this morning, and am using it to run carbon. I ended up reversing the flow on the reactor so that the carbon is pushed down by the pump, which kept it from tumbling and floating around. That brs ROX is so fine that I couldn't dial down the maxijet nearly enough without making way too much noise. The way it's setup now I have it dialed down about 50% and it's quiet enough...the carbon is sandwiched between 2 sponges, and the flow pressing it down has kept it all compacted at the bottom of the reactor.

The anthias are doing great. It took a couple hours to acclimate them yesterday, and 3 of 4 of them hid for most of the day...though they all did come out to feed. Woke up this morning and all 4 were out swimming together.

I'll get better pics with my camera once these guys settle in and I have the lights on again. Grabbed a couple quick photos with the phone using the ambient lighting. One definitely seems to be making the transition to a male...his colors are much brighter and he tends to chase the shoal to keep them together. There's one fish that he challenges more than the others, and that fish does tend to break off from the group sometimes. My money is on getting 2 males and 2 females out of the group...time will tell.

Spent the greater part of the day re-routing wires and getting my new Apex online...what a royal PITA...but it was worth it. I had a disgusting birdsnest of wires hiding behind my old 28g build, and my 20g nano was no better; I actually had my power strip sitting on top of my rubbermaid ATO bin for several months. I finally got the 20gal cleaned up a few months ago, and although I never really corrected the mess on the nanocube (since the tank is coming down)...I saw the birdsnest coming together quickly on this tank, and decided to stop being lazy and get to work.

Industrial strength velcro is awesome.

I went with the Apex Jr. My main lighting will be a Radion, which will be communicating wirelessly with a pair of vortechs (have one, still need a 2nd eventually)...so that eliminated the need for some extra outlets and modules. My main needs for the Apex, aside from remote monitoring, are control of my 2 heaters and being able to shut down a few of my pumps for feeding and maintenance. I put my skimmer, return pump, and MJ900 all on a splitter so that they are controlled by one outlet; although I'll probably end up putting the skimmer on its own outlet. My ATO is being controlled by the JBJ unit, so I have that running independent of the Apex as well, which I'm fine with. The ATO is on an old school mechanical timer that I have set to run every 3 hrs for 30 minutes...its built-in failsafe only allows it to run for 15 minutes at a time. Since I'm using an aqualifter pump, with those redundancies I'm not too worried about the ATO emptying into the sump. My fuge light is also on a mechanical timer still...12hrs on / 12 hrs off seemed simple enough to run independently of the Apex, and since I'm using an LED for a fuge light I saw no need to be able to shut the light down if the temp increases too much. So...2 heaters and 3 pumps on a splitter took up 3 of my outlets, which leaves me with one to play with...it'll likely be programmed for my skimmer.

I used the basic wizard to program my on/off temps for the heaters...but still need to figure out how to program the pumps and a "feed mode". For now, everything is at least running...I have plenty reading to do on Apex programming though.

Speaking of the skimmer...the only reason it's not on an individual outlet right now is that the cord is TOO SHORT! It's not even close to reaching inside the cabinet next to the tank...I suppose if you have a 6ft tank and your surge protector on the opposite end of the stand you're just screwed. That would be my only gripe with the CADlights skimmer...I love it otherwise, but the cord is ridiculously short.

/end rant

So have you seen any aggression with the anthias yet or does it seem like the magic number and hiding spaces.

Honestly they pretty much swim together all day. The obvious male will flare up and dance in front of the females, but no real aggression. If they don't respond he might chase them or dance right next to them and rub a little...but that's about it. For the most part it seems like his goal has been to chase them back into the group if they wander off. I actually haven't seen any of them needing to hide from each other, they pretty much stay out in the open all day...if one does wander off and hangs out in a crevice...the male will eventually go over there to coax them out. If any of the other 3 start to pair off or flare at each other...he goes over there and breaks up the party. So far so good...we'll see how things progress as they mature.

edit: I should also mention that I had the lights in the DT off for the first 3 days. I didn't want the added nutrients to fuel a cyano bloom, and I figured it'd help them acclimate. Tonight is the first time I've had the lights on for any decent amount of time (4hrs so far)....I ran them for maybe an hour last night. I've noticed them taking "breaks" from being out in the open and hiding under overhangs, but still no aggression aside from being a little boisterous at feeding and when the lights turn on/off.

The new anthias proved difficult to photograph given that they never stay still and I'm running an extremely low amount of light...but here are some photos anyway ;)

Here's a pic of the male...he started getting that distinct yellow bar down the side a few days ago. So far the other fish haven't shown any obvious signs of changing.

Can't thank you enough for the deal on the tank...hopefully I can get this system looking as healthy as you had it going.

the cad skimmer cord is super short, causing me headaches as well. good solid skimmer though.

It took a week of wanting to bang my head against the wall...but I finally got the Apex hooked up for remote access last night. I was having issues accessing the router's config menu when attempting to type the IP address into a browser; turns out the router my signal is coming from is actually an Apple Airport Express, which required I download a separate program to access the setup menu. The good news is I have access, the bad news is that the Apple router doesn't automatically update the dynamic IP address, so I had to download yet another program to keep the DNS updated, which means the computer will need to be on 24/7 while I'm on vacation in order to maintain a reliable connection. If the router or ISP resets the address...I'd lose connection without the computer on.

So...the apparent workaround for this is to get a webcam that supports dynamicDNS so that my host stays updated to an IP address changes. I think I'm about to cross the line of excessive OCD control/viewing of my tank while I'm not home...and I kinda like it. :p

Tank's been running great though; I've noticed no algae bloom due to adding the quartet of anthias. I'm going to check the water today since I'm a week out from adding them, and see if my parameters took a hit at all. If all is well, my nitrates should still be hovering below 2 and I definitely shouldn't see any ammonia or nitrites. Given that I ghost fed the tank for a month prior, I think I should be good.

With the heatwave earlier this week, the temp in my house was running at 76-78, which brought the tank up to about 82 degrees. I cranked up the AC and kept the house at 74...but the tank barely seemed to cool down. It's as far from the AC unit as it could be and sits next to an exterior wall. Although that wall faces North, it used to be a big barn door that they sealed with drywall...insulation is questionable, lol. I ended up sitting a clip-on fan over the sump, and used the last outlet on the Apex Jr to control it. It's set to come on at 80.5 and shut down at 80...it's been working out great and usually runs for about 45 minutes before shutting down. My ATO bin is definitely going a bit faster; my evaporation rate probably went from about 1/2 gallon per day to just over a gallon.

Re: Jahmic's Tasty Cubed Reef Recipe

Tested for nutrients prior to a 15 gal water change today.

Ammonia - 0
Nitrites - 0
Nitrates - 0

It looks the the skimmer is doing it's job...nitrates have actually dropped since adding the fish.

It was hard to get the skimmer dialed in while ghost feeding, and it was pulling wet for a few days after adding the fish. I had run the silencer for the skimmer outside the sump to prevent salt creep getting in there...but I used 1/4" airline. The airline was restricting air flow too much since it has a smaller ID than the original tubing...once I removed it the skimmer started producing better (finer) bulbs and darker skimmate.

I'll wait a couple weeks to let the anthias really settle in, then start moving my fish over. I'm going to watch the parameters...but I'm thinking one fish every 2-3 weeks should be fine.
