Re: Jahmic's Tasty Cubed Reef Recipe

The UV is running on an MJ1200 now, and the carbon reactor is on an MJ900 (with an older mj600 impeller since that's what I had available). The temp has been trending down, I hit 79.5 overnight while I couldn't get below 80.5 before. It hasn't peaked yet, but it hasn't hit 80.5 today...prior to swapping pumps it peaked at 81. The Apex has me splitting hairs here, but it's nice to know either way.

All the vinyl tubing makes it look like Dr. Octopus is hiding in my sump :p Oh well...I suppose it's functional and I like having separate pumps for each piece of filtration as it makes maintenance a little more convenient (eg I can change the carbon without shutting everything else down.)

Skimmer is officially broken in...no more wet skimmate. Not looking forward to dumping that nastiness this weekend.

Absolutely top notch job Khalis. So glad you were able to save the fish. Wonder if that's the same thing that took out all mine?

Anyway, your tank is looking great. Can't wait to see the radion over it.

Thanks Drew, good to see you around here again. :)

After I went through this infection, I thought back to the issues you were having...the quick onset and no warning does seem very similar. My anthias are looking healthier by the day, gaining weight and coloring up a bit. I'll be leaving the tank unattended for 36hrs and relying on an autofeeder for 3-4 feedings...hopefully they can do without medication for a day.

Decided to start moving my fish over...so I put together a bottle trap for my diamond goby.

He built a burrow under a small rock, so I figured I'd wait for him to go inside and place the trap over the rock, burying the open end in the sand. Worked like a charm. He wouldn't swim straight up into the opening though and get trapped inside that second chamber, so I slowly lifted one end of the opening and coaxed him in with my hand as I tilted the trap sideways. So far so good.

Grabbed a bag, dumped him in there, and he looked unphased by the ordeal. Dipped the bag into the tank to get some more water in there...and he literally swam up the flow of water entering the bag like the damn Silver Surfer and lept out a good 2ft into the air! Gaaaah!

Since I'm still in transition with furniture tetris due to the new build...the nano is sitting next to my 6ft long wood dresser that's stuffed with clothing...and he jumped right behind it. I checked underneath, saw nothing, but heard him flop around a couple times. I somehow lifted the dresser up and away from the wall...still nothing.

He ended up flopping himself right behind the tank stand...luckily there was enough of a gap where I could see him...covered in dust bunnies. He was probably out of water for 30 seconds, but it certainly felt like forever. Dropped him in a bag, gave him a good rinse, then added more tank water. He's floating in the sump acclimating now, with an air pump running in the bag for good measure. His breathing seems back to normal after understandable freaking out while carpet surfing.

Sheesh...and it was so close to being an easy transition. I'll update on his condition later, but he looks like he's going to be fine.

I had a chromis take a flying leap when I wasn't looking the other day. Don't know how long he was on the floor, but I got him back in the tank as soon as I saw him. Several minutes went by, but eventually he was swimming with the others as if nothing happened.

So, unfortunately my diamond goby didn't make it. :( I think the stress did him in. In hindsight, I probably should have just returned him to the original tank instead of moving him into this build...but since I was using the same salt and the parameters between the tanks (including pH and temp) were almost identical, I went ahead and made the transfer and hoped for the best.

Pretty bummed about the loss, as he was the first fish to go into my original reef. He definitely had an intestinal parasite for quite a while...it went unnoticed for several months until I recently treated that tank with prazipro, and he had just started to fatten up a little. There's a good chance he was to weak to take the stress after leaping out of the tank. He was a goner about 3-4 hrs after adding him to the display :(

Good news is that I received a new wrasse from liveaquaria: Halichoeres biocellatus. I acclimated him on Tuesday...he was visibly stressed in the bucket and hid in the sand about 15 minutes after adding him to the DT. He was out exploring yesterday though and took well to the 2 feedings. I'll let him settle in for a bit, then add my Halichoeres chrysus to the tank and see how they do together.

I have crappy cell phone pics through dirty glass if you're that desperate :p

Once I clean the tank again and get a new UV bulb I'll break out the DSLR...

LOL @ Chad. I can verify that it happened, at least until he breaks out the DSLR. I took delivery of it. Mike and Andrew each got one, too. Pretty cool wrasses.

Busy week...got the rest of my fist moved over from the nanocube and picked up a BEAUTIFUL new wrasse from Cris at Aquatic Art. Everyone is getting along well...in fact, aside from the anthias doing their thing, none of the fish seem to pay any attention to each other. :p

Caught my wrasse poking his head out of the sand to make sure there were no predators (or nets) in sight before venturing out...

I know...no pics of the new wrasse, what gives! He just started venturing out of his cave today, so I'm going to give it a couple days for him to settle in before I shove a camera in his face.

OK, fine...I went to feed the tank and he started dancing for me...it looks like he's settling in nicely:
