Phyto light

For those that are growing their own phyto I have a question. What type of lighting/ wavelength is best? Any cheap lights, i.e. Home Depot, giving good results? Also I would love to see pics of your setups?

Not sure about phyto in particular, but all macros do good with a 6500k and even better with a 2700k. I would assume the same applies to phyto.

this is my set up I have a four way air pump on it and the light are regular t5 white from Walmart I got for 15 buck works great for me

Mine is a box lined with acrylic mirror, and powered by 2 flavor of the month CFL's. I think right now I'm just using 13w 2700k. I usually only have two cultures going at a time, but can have up to 8 two liter cultures off the same two bulb set up, just need to open additional air lines.

Nice set up maybe I should put mirrors around mines....

What are you 2 using as food source. I've seen miracle grow mentioned as an option?

On the topic of phyto, I watched a video on youtube of people using a liquid miracle grow to grow theirs. I would be a little worried about the chemicals from the miraclegrow messing with the corals or causing other problems with the DT water. Anyone have experience with using miraclegrow to grow phyto? what other fertilizers do you use?

Yep, MG here too, but I use about 7ml per 2liter, but I don't split in half. I don't use as much as I make, so I start a culture with about 6oz, gets me a little more grow time, and a back up culture.

Why would you use miracle grow? That has all sorts of nasty **** in it. Just go to a hydroponics store and get some good organic liquid formula for vegetative period.

I never knew there was organic liquid formula for it . ... but mg seem to be doing fine so far..... plus it last me forever at a cheap price

You would be surprised how far a bottle of nutes from a hydro store will last you. A 10 dollar bottle of foxfarm grow would probably last years. Plus then you know your fishies are getting all the vitamins and minerals that go into stoners weed, .

I use Rodi water for everything that has to do with reefing...

yeah thanks zombie, I didnt know foxfarm made a liquid fertilizer, but it makes sense that they do. And I would trust it for longterm use over the MiracleGrow. Going to start up my own phyto box soon too then.

I would agree with you, In my researching I found a lot of people that advocate the use of tap water go figure

you guys are nutz using miracle grow....


I use Gullards F/2 formula. It does not have copper like miracle grow.

.75ml per 2 liters and Each 3g carboy I dose 3ml per top off (I wait till it gets down to the last 2 inches to top off)



As for lights I just use a combination of 6.5k and 2.7k CLF's.


And only RO/di water. Salinity at 1.018.
