Ryan’s ever changing tank...

Thanks! Everything was super moody since they didn’t have any light for a few days. I need to retake pictures now that everything has opened up more and is adjusting.

Has anyone done sanding of acrylic? Trying to buff out scratches and while it gets better with each step, there sure is an awful haze. Up to 6000 grit now

How long should I be spending on each level of grit per sq ft? Any tips? I have 9 levels of micro mesh wet sandpaper. 1500-12000. Does a great job of getting the scratches out but the clarity doesn’t change much.

I haven’t done this myself, but I know it can look significantly better with water in it. Have you checked with water in?

#25
I haven’t. I did quite a bit of work on the finer levels. I think it looks ok. Not sure if I really made it better or not.

Have a moody acan. The others are open and full everyday but this one is slightly contracted over the last week.

Parameters-

Calcium 460
Alk 7-9. It’s been depleting super quickly lately even with daily dosing
Magnesium 1320
Nitrate 0
Phosphate 0
feeding heavier to get these up

Thoughts?

Well it’s been a week and things have been transferred to the new tank. I don’t have my rodi filter moved yet so filling has been slow. Finished up the plumbing today and will hopefully have my filter hooked up and making water tomorrow. After that it’s onto aquascaping and coral placement.

Well according to my last post, I never finished filling my tank. Oops. Finally put a five online. There is nothing better than grabbing a bunch of random parts and being able to set it up, plumb it and get it online without a single trip to the store. Or maybe it’s a bad thing that I have that much extra crap lying around. View attachment 12684 once I get the display tank clean I’ll have to get some pictures of it.

I got the tank cleaned up. There is some type of brown algae that is incredibly hard to get off so I’ve been neglecting it. Pretty sure my arms will be double in size tomorrow. Water is still pretty cloudy but I can see everything again!!

Well, it’s been a year since I’ve posted any updates on the tank. Not a ton has changed. Things are growing really well and I am struggling to keep up with alk demand. Right now I am dosing BRS 2 part at 60ml/day. Is it normal for alk to be double that if the calcium? I think I remember hearing that with BRS but can’t remember. Most recent pictures after cleaning and giving up for the day.

Awhile back I did add an automated hood lift to the tank. Took a video to post but never did. So here is a picture (sort of) of it. It was a pain to install with the tank already in place but would have been super easy had I put it in before. All it took was two tracks in each back corner and then the device in the middle to lift it.

Are you using the same brand of each? Some brands are more concentrated than others. If they are the same brand I would start questioning my test kits. After that I’m not sure.

#34
They’re both the older type mixed per the instructions. I am dosing 25 ml of calcium and with two different brands of test kits it measures 450-475 on a weekly basis. Alkalinity (soda ash) is being dosed at 65 ml a day and sits around 6 dkh. I have measured using api and hanna checker. I have also been mixing up and additional tsp of dry with rodi and adding to the tank for the last 2 weeks because it had dropped to a dkh of 5. For the last week with all of that the alkalinity is fluctuating between a 6-7

Is it the soda ash or the baking soda?

How are you dosing? By hand, dosing pump?

When are you dosing?

What is your magnesium at?

6 DKH is just below what the safe. I think natural sea water is 6.5 and I like to have some room for mistakes.

It is the soda ash and it’s dosed by a Kamoer dosing pump set to dispense 8 times throughout the day. The extra tsp is being added by hand. half around 7am and the other half around 4-5pm. Magnesium doser is off right now and has been for a few months. That tests at about 1450-1500. Was using salifert for that and recently switched to aqua forest (not a fan of that test kit). I like to keep it up at 8 as well. Can’t figure out where it’s going. Maybe it’s bad? I don’t ever see any precipitate in the water and the pumps don’t have any build up.

Time for a change and things are beginning to happen today. I got a new tank and spent some time polishing it up. Turned out pretty slick but no way of knowing for sure until it’s full!!

Had some friends come over and get it in the house. Pretty sure they had no idea what they were getting themselves into but it went super smooth.

And today I am FINALLY getting to the plumbing.
