I think depending on the tank and what coral one would be growing. Yes but then again I have a 20g tall heavily stocked with fish and coral that does not lmao....

I haven't ran a skimmer in many years. So I would say, they certainly have their uses but I would not say they are required especially with a lightly stocked tank

You have to find a way to do efficient gas exchange and also remove heavy metals that you introduce in food. Skimmer is a good way to do these two things, along with organic removal. Skimmer is not necessary, but you have to find a way to do these things.
