Craig, if you happen to go by Clearwater just South of Tampa. I found some really good snorkeling , just on the other side of the bridge from Clearwater beach. there is some man made breaks loaded with sea life.
LOL, I used to go there as well. Also...on clearwater beach if you head South along the coast, keep going past the jetty/rock pile and there's a cove that opens up on the other side. There's a shallow break you can snorkel in that's full of sea life and people-friendly dolphins usually hang out in the deeper water further out in the cove. I've never seen anybody out there when I used to live in FL. ;)

Not much more info on that spot I mentioned...but it's on the North side of the inlet just past the South Jetty. It's been years since I've been out there, but it was the spot I went to the most often when I lived just outside of Tampa.

If you have the time, you can take a boat to Egmont Key just off the coast of Tampa. There's a sunken fort out there from the Spanish-American war that now hosts a TON of fish. Depending on the time of year/day of week it can get a little touristy...but weekdays it's pretty quiet.

If you like hanging out at the beach for a day, head down to Sarasota and check out at Siesta Beach. Some of the most beautiful white sand you will ever see. It naturally comes down the Mississippi river from the Appalachian mountains. It's about a 2hr drive from Orlando I think.

You got tons of suggestions already to keep you busy in Tampa, especially if you're doing any diving/snorkeling, but if you're not doing these things and also are more interested in touring the gulf beaches...you could go to Fort Desoto (amazing/quiet and seculded...can google it...) drive up Gulf Blvd all the way up to Clearwater beach (~1 hr)...stop for awesome seafood along the way at one of dozens of good restaurants...that will be a stop/tour of a more quant/secluded run than Clearwater beach.

That said...Clearwater beach is more of a young (hot bod etc) scene than the St. Pete Beaches...so pick your poison...relax and soak up the sun or people watch.

If you do that tour, you could hit St John's Pass in Madiera Beach, boardwalk with shops and restaurants.

I lived on a key 5 minutes from Ft Desoto

when diving, just don't collect any of the brain corals! Protected species and expensive fine if/when caught. Good friend collected 2 for his reef and was caught with them a year later when Fish & Wildlife came to his house to collect a pest alligator. Saw it in the tank, recognized it and busted his *** on the spot. $1500 coral that he didn't get to keep!
