water changes

#1
Lately I have been doing more regular water changes, about 30 gallons every 3 weeks on a 70 gallon tank with a 50 gallon sump before I was really bad about doing them sometimes going a couple of months with out doing one. Seems like my tank is doing better then ever on the 3 week schedule. Just wondering what kind of water changes some of you guys do, amount you change and the frequency?

Double edge sword brah. You don't actually need to change your water as long as you replace what is being utilized by your system. This is also where the crazy amount of reactors comes in (ie. PO4, NO3). Water changes are a really convenient way of nutrient export/replenishing depleted minerals/vitamins/aminos/and basically duplicate the way the ocean naturally does this (low tide and high tide). I used to do 30g every week on a 120g. Overkill, yes. Expensive, yes. Awesome growth on my corals, yes. HTH

I do 6g a week on 60g volume, but gonna start doing automatic WC's at a gallon a day, as soon as I have another 250$

I have been adding salt to the system and letting it top off as I sell stuff. Does that count? Otherwise I did a water change 16 months ago.

15 gals every 2-4 or 6 weeks depending on when I can get to it. 72DT with 30fuge.

I can start to see the effects after 3-4 weeks so i try not to go more than that.

what do those of you not doing water changes do to avoid it? I cant seem to get away from doing them for long periods of time.

My nitrates were constantly at zero even without water changes.
All I had to do was dose calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium. I'm sure the
minor elements were out of whack but it wasn't affecting my corals so I didn't
worry about using supplements for them.

My tank was also five years old so it was pretty mature.
I still have the tank but I use the past tense on it because I lost all my SPS after
changing my lighting out to AI fixtures. DOH!
