I have a buddy that started tank with crushed coral and he wants to convert to sand. Has anyone done this before? Also what if he just added the sand to the c/c? Would that work and make it so he wouldn't have to vac the c/c all the time?
I hated my cc. Dumped it, hosed the tank, and started fresh with sand when I moved. Not sure about while a tank is up. You could probably add sand on top or mix. Would cut back on the issues I would think but not solve.
Ya I'm sure he doesn't want to stop and tear down the tank, also its a huge tank. Thinking about scooping most out then just letting the rest settle and maybe used for goby dens.
I use crushed coral and rather like it. I don't vac it at all... dont see the need. What is it he's vacuuming out? How long has he had it? Seems mine is teeming with creatures that I guess keep it clean. It isnt the most pleasing visually but it isn't bad either.
To the question--- yeah I'd scoop it out little by little-- not much else you can do.
Knowing the age and depth of the crushed coral would help, I would go very slowly if it is old, or deep, but if it is fairly new, or very shallow it can be done much faster.

+1 depending on depth (more than maybe 3/4") he could release all sorts of unwanted stuff into the water. Go slow... Weeks and clean the sand bed in tank throughly as he goes. Imo
