Reef PAR Database

Everyone in the hobby refers to PAR a lot when talking about their lighting, but I wonder how many even know what their lights put out or even what a good reading is in the first place. I'm going to start a purely comparative database of test results so people can see what certain types of lights actually put how, how it falls off in water and hopefully learn some more about reef lighting.

Try Advanced Aquarist or coralscience.org. They have a couple articles about PAR levels on the reef in nature as well as individual coral requirements. I know AA has an article about Purple Monster Acro hitting its photosynthetic limit at 600mmol. Thus the reason I scrapped my halides. 1200mmol at the surface and 800+mmol at the sand just seemed like overkill.

I saw a write about the same thing although the guy tested different bulbs with different ballasts, and he had an array of data stating which bulb gets the best par with which ballast. I believe it was mahattan reefers, I'll try and find it.

I have no idea what my par levels are. I just count on the people making the lights to know what they are doing and go by there recommendations. All my corals look good and grow so someting must be right. Interested in seeing your results though.

Perfect timing. Just got my PAR readings this morning, what a great device to have as I how know I need to raise my lights about 6 to six inches to get better results...

Actually, Lyle who was browning from the DARC club stopped by this morning on his way to drop it back off. I am going to rent/ borrow it again from Dave once I get my lights hung to get a second reading. As the way I have them now is super inefficient... When I get it I will run it over to you.
