Just a side not for anyone starting this thread this is just a split from the craigslist thread of the info pertaining to this topic both to allow discusion of this issue and to keep the craigslist thread on topic. This is not a new thread by Chad to clear up any doubts.

Decent price on a brand new Nuvo 16. I sure hope its not the one donated and raffled off at the last AquaMart meeting. If its not then I apologize for implying it is.

Re: Craigslist Deal of the Day

While I guess I would agree and I do apologize for being blunt. I will edit my post to be more tactful and curious to all.
However I will not as a member, bod or bystander stand back and watch things that are donated to the MASC community and won at raffles to be sold on CL with out saying anything.

+1000000 that's ridiculous to say no one should comment on it... U serious? A business and friend of MASC donated that tank! Our community should be upset, as many individuals who were not as lucky that day would have loved to setup this tank and be a greater part of this community! Not sell it for profit!

I support CRW on this one. The raffles of MASC are set up that you put your tickets down on an item you want. If you put tickets in for a item with the intent of selling that is shady as there are others in the club who put tickets in for that prize for the specific reason of winning and keeping it as there own or GIFTing to a loved one who is interested in the hobby. It would be one thing if your ticket went in to a big drum and you won something you have no need for or intention of using. I won a exhaust system once for a car I don't even own and would never own. I made a trade with a guy who wanted it and he had something I needed.

Further there is a post about the tank that was won at the meeting and the person was looking to make a trade.

Craigslist Deal of the Day

I'm with Chad. I was standing by many members who really wanted it. If you don't want it don't put your ticket in the drawing. I am glad I won my clowns I would have been soooo mad had I seen them on Craigslist.

Another thing to think about is if the sponsor who donates things to this club sees them for sale how Likely are they to donate again?

Guys I hate to say it but it happens all the time (not saying its the right thing to do by any means). Just wait, in a couple weeks, CL will be flooded with members and others pawning off stuff they won at Reefstock. Happens every year unfortunately.

Exactly!!

It's not drama, it's protecting the ability for this club to get furthers donations.

On the assumption that it's the tank won at the raffle...
While it is a valid point that he won that tank, and has the right to do whatever he likes with it, I won't lie and say I was happy to see this listed for sale, and I'm sure the person/company that donated it isn't thrilled about it either. If it was me, I'd be a lot less inclined to donate in the future. Yes, I bought raffle tickets specifically for that tank, and I really wanted to win it so that it could be set up and enjoyed. Not sold on craigslist. As a member, I simply do not look at this club as a source of profit. I don't see the club raffles as a source of deeply discounted merchandise I can sell, nor do I think of members as customers I can make money from. I come here to learn, to get help, to help others, and generally to communicate with others who share the same insane addiction to creating small bits of the ocean in this landlocked state in the middle of the country.
That said, the original post was a bit reactionary. I am glad to see that it has been edited to be less inflammatory. I support the board, I understand that their positions are tough to manage at times, and I appreciate everything they do for the rest of us. It's like herding cats, and there's no way they can make us all happy. I do not for one minute think that any of the BOD is sitting back enjoying this stuff.
For my part, and definitely just for what it's worth, I'd like to see a more coherent message from the board on what their expectations are of the members and prospective members. First we're reminded that giving feedback on vendors is encouraged, so that other members and prospective members can decide who they want to do business with. Not to mention avoid getting scammed. But when someone gives negative feedback, the reaction is sometimes harsh and makes others unwilling to do the same. We are reminded to watch what we say, that we aren't to give input unless we were involved, etc. Then we're told that it's just a hobby, stop being so serious, have fun, get back to the reason we all joined the club and got into the hobby in the first place. (I agree with that 100%, by the way. I'd like to go back to just having fun at this, and spending too much money to keep fish happy.) Then, before I've had time to turn around twice, I'm reminded that outsiders are watching us, and that saying or doing something wrong could cost the club reputation in the national arena. I absolutely agree that we need to act like adults, and treat each other with respect and courtesy, to include phrasing things with more facts and fewer insults and no name-calling. On the flip side, the BOD has a responsibility to the members. If someone is routinely using the tools the club has provided (this forum, meetings, etc) to scam it's members, then the BOD needs to handle them accordingly.

Here is the deal the person selling the item won it fair and square it is there to do what they wish to do with it. A sponsor donates to the club to pay dues. The club raffles these items off to cover expenses. With that said does it really matter Why does it matter if the winner wants to sell his item? Who are we to judge someone for selling there aquarium related items. if you feel differently that's your right. But life goes on and our tanks survive.

My thought on it if it doesn't pertain to you let it be.

No offense intended toward anyone.

We don't even know if it is or not. So were getting worked up over what? Exactly why I want to be done here.

Re: Craigslist Deal of the Day

I have to agree with bod if you are lucky enough to win a donated item then turn and sell it for profit no matter what the profit is its shady. that would be like me purchasing your tank then turning it for profit. I'm sure you would be pretty upset if you seen your tank posted at a higher price than what you sold it for. bad business imo

If it is the setup that was won at the meeting then it was also offered to this group for a trade for something else that he could use.

The issue that i had was with the words chosen and the feeling behind them at a time when this group is reeling from several threads that have hurt the membership's morale. We need more support for one another with out the emotional outbursts and attacks.

Thank you Chad for for standing up and admitting that you could have chosen more tactful words for alerting this group to the issue.

Wow, looks almost split between people who think it's none of our business even if it's not the "coolest" thing to do with a prize. Vs. those who are taking offense. I'm on the fence, but lean towards what Cindy and Dan said. (1cent for each, for my 2cents, heh.) Overall, if whoever won it (i have NO idea who since I wasn't there), doesn't have a use for it, then why not selling it and get what they do need to continue their hobby? Especially if they offered it up here on MASC (I didn't see or know if they did).

I definitely think it's a little odd to go overboard with emotion over it though, it's not like they harshly stabbed people in the back or did bad business on the forum, they won it within the rules. Are they contributing members otherwise, with their posts, etc.? Have they had problems here in the past? Are they one of those members who only buy/sell stuff here? Or actually participate?

Side-note, isn't the 30g version $300? Maybe I'm not looking right...
