I am toying with the idea of an emporer angel. Does anyone have experience with this. I do live clams but am willing to pass on those for this fish
that's a huge fish that will nip at everything. imo Maybe if you get a small one and feed the heck out of him. If he is nipping at small corals that would be bas. I saw one at the aquarium in honolulu Hi. The tank had acro colonies that was 3 feet in diameter. maybe 2000 gallon aquarium and the fish looked too big... Don't get me wrong, that's a sexy fish!

What about one of the Genicanthus angels? They're reef safe so you wouldn't have to worry about tearing the tank down later to save corals. Not large enough?

It's not really size that matters. Just seems like the big angels have way more color. Probably just a pipe dream. But hey one could hope.

What about Navarchus or Annularis? From what I read, they don't get so big and are best small pomacanthids. I had em both, they are agressive and still get to look huge even in a small tank. I ended up pulling them out because they were hell for any other bigger fish. Whether they are a bigger gamble in a reef tank, I don't know. Annularis looks amazing under reef lighting.

I really like the annularis but literature so far is not looking good for that species. However you can now purchase them as captive bread. Maybe that will make them less prone to eating corals at the base. The only two I have found that tend to leave sps corals alone are the emporer and regal. I would be afraid the regal is to shy. And seems they are very hard to keep alive or even acclimate.

My hope was that I would hear from fellow reefers that have this fish. Does anyone in the club have an emporer in a fish only or a reef tank.

OH THANK GOD! Khalis, you da MAN!
Nevermind that he read it all over the interwebs that ya can't put that fish with corals...
Might as well have big red flags surrounding every pic of this fish that all read "bad idea! bad idea! bad idea!"
Still wants to find SOME way for it to be ok to have that fish with corals.
Until by some miracle, Khalis reaches him. Breaks through that nearly impenetrable wall of desire with the words, "nips LPS and SPS"

Most stubborn man ever, I think.

Hahaha.

Well...I learned my lesson. Considered getting a flameback angel that was only nipping a clam in Charlie's tank, then read on the internet that they nip sps and clams. He wasn't nipping SPS before, so I figured it'd be safe. He behaved for several weeks before attacking my milleporas and red planet...had to tear the tank down to remove him. Luckily I had an empty 20 gal that was ready to be stocked...he's in solitary confinement now.

Never again will I roll the dice on adding "reef safe with caution" angels to a mixed reef.

I think 'reef safe with caution' is best translated as 'make my day'. Or maybe, "buy this fish so I can make a fortune selling you replacement corals for the ones that he's gonna nosh on'.

Sorry but I don't think the club bylaws allow for it
