Welcome! If you’re talking about putting the tank in the basement on a slab, it might be worth just avoiding the expansion joints. The slab can move around quite a bit then with no real concern.

I’ve only seen one house since I’ve been here that suffered from movement. Their toilet was levitating off of the ground because the drain line didn’t move and the floor did.

As far as slab movement goes, that is actually kind of rare around here. The only area that I know of that is really prone to that sort of thing is around Roxbourgh park, but in general the ground is pretty solid here due to the hard clay soil that dominates the front range.

Welcome I vote build thread. Let's see what your planning. Do you already have the tank?if so we even like seeing empty tanks. We may tell you get water in it but that's the name of the game. One last thing dont forget to pee in it for the cycle.

I was planning on putting the entire system in the basement. The basement is a walk out basement which is not as common as I thought here. I will start a build thread full of photos. Due to the basement being unfinished, I have the luxury and "permission" to build a fish room right behind the new tank. I will be working with Cris ( aquarium art) to get a new custom tank built for my project. Shooting for a peninsula about 6-8ft long, 30-36in width, and 24in height. I appreciate all of you who chimed in about the basement slab moving, because it made me very nervous to put that large of a system on concrete that could move putting non linear stress on the glass and cracking it.

Build thread and project start is middle to end of November.

Everyone seems to always like pictures. Here are some old ones of 260 build and 120 reef ( and yes in the first photo I plumbed into my sewage system (patched part of dry wall) so water changes were east HA) .

Cris at aquatic art is awesome and helpful. I am there almost every week lol. the tank itself looks great man and can't wait to see how it transforms.
For the fish room being a walk out basement I suggest insulating it some what, the cold colorado winters drops temperature in basements a little bit. As always welcome and keep us up to date.

I’m in the process of my build along with finishing our basement. I’m in Thornton too. Are you going to be finishing your basement before the tank is in?

They are going to go hand in hand. Most likely the tank will be ready before the basement just due to more passion lying in reef tanks versus remodel haha.
