I'll probably get the kit from RapidLED. They have a dimmable retro kit that fits inside the hood. Though with the heat issue I had yesterday, I'm really considering getting rid of the lid all together. Scared the crap out of me when I woke up yesterday and the tank was at 86. Took fans blowing all day to bring it down to 82.
Strange to get overheating issues with a BioCube and power compacts. Is there maybe a problem with your heater's thermostat? Or is the MaxiJet kicking out a lot of heat for some reason?

Dracx,

Not sure what's going on. I bought a new heater on Saturday because I thought mine might be broken. Temp was at 82. Put in the new heater set at 79, and the tank was at 86 yesterday morning. Last night I took the new heater out and put the old one back in. Tank was at 81.1 this morning, though I did leave the filter door open most of the night. I'll have my wife watch the temps today and we'll see what happens. I didn't think these ran that hot either. I'll just keep watching it and see what happens.

I never trust the temperature indicators printed on the heaters. Turn the thermo stat way lower than desired then let the heaters sit an hour in the tank to adjust the internal thermostat. Then, assuming your tank is already at the desired temperature, dial the heater up until it clicks on, then slightly back of that point. More often than not, the temp does not match the markings on the heater. I also try to confirm temps with at least two different types of thermometers.

Good idea. I'll try that tonight.

Not sure but dont the Bio cubes have fans in the canopy.... you might make sure those are working too. Calibrating your heater to the tank is a must as well:)

Both fans seem to be working. I would really like to get my temp down to a constant 77-79. I'm probably going to add a fan or 2 to the feeding door to help pull in cooler air from the house. Don't really want to raise the lid or go topless, though the rimless Biocube's I've seen look really nice.

Cool, just throwing extra ideas out that i didnt see commented on. I also agree to turn your heater down to change the temp of your water until its where you want it. Regardless 79 degrees on your heater might not be 79 degrees... HTH

Thanks. All ideas are welcome at this point. I'll try adjusting the heater tonight.

Adjusted the heater last night, and got the tank down to 79.9. I left the feeder door open and turned the heater all the way down until the temp got down, then I turned the heater up until the light changed from green to orange. Backed it off a little and the heater is sitting at 76.

Thanks for the help guys. Hopefully it's stabalized now.

Do you guys know what size loc-line splitter and tube I would need to do dual outlets on the return? I've seen other tanks like this and would like to be able to manipulate my flow a little more.

Still looking for the loc-line if anybody has any ideas.

On another note, do you guys think the stock PC lighting will support a Hammer or Frogspawn?

I'm fairly certain you'll have 1/2" loc-line. They typically only come in 6" sections and you would just need a "Y" adapter to have a split (dual outlets...I think this is what you meant). I just spent $100 for loc-line. Not cheap...but I would have paid twice that at LFS's unfortunately. Go directly to the loc-line manufacturer...it was cheaper than anyone else...even when compared to free shipping with Dr. Fosters, I still wound up saving another $20 or so even having to pay shipping. hth

andyrm66, thanks for the info on the Hammer. Maybe I'll be able to pick one up at the swap this weekend.

Shelby, thanks for the link on the loc-line.

One other question. I bought the API Reef Master test kit and some how lost 2 of the color charts. Is there a way I can get replacements, or should I just print some out from online? My concern would be that my printer wouldn't get the colors right and I'd be going for the wrong colors.

I had 3 different digital thermometers and they all were off. One was 11 degrees off the other 6 and 5. I wouldn't put much trust in those. I would suggest a reefkeeper lite if you can afford it. It is well worth the $$. Otherwise the glass tube thermometers have given me the most consistent results.

I got a glass tube to check my digital and it's right on. Once I "aclimated" my heater to the tank the temps have been much better. Now it only varies from 80-82.5. I'm trying to dial in the heater a little more to get less of a swing, but the lights heat the tank up some so guess there's only so much I can control.

I had overheating issues with my 28g JBJ Nano with PC's. I haven't had such an issue so far this fall/winter. Is the room you have the tank in getting a lot of furnace heat now that winter is here? I have to keep on top of that with my upstairs bedroom (where the nano is) because if I close the door to my room the room temp goes WAY up. Just food for thought.

Unfortunately, I got pretty bad swings this summer. I finally got a better / more powerful heater so the A/C wouldn't make it swing so low at night. It definitely stabilized for the most part. I'm probably going to add two fans as well this summer for a total of four. I don't know if you have that option with the Biocube??

Your printer would probably get the colors wrong, in my experience. If you have any freshwater API charts they'll work. Not perfectly, but it's something. If your chemicals don't expire it's a possibility that you could just get some more and hold onto the charts. Or... which charts are you missing? I might have extras that I can give you if you're coming to the swap tomorrow.
