Ahem. How big a skimmer you looking for (you know, in case I happen to have an extra large one, oh, sitting in my garage)?

Yeah I know, I know, I know!!!!! As much as I would like to buy it I can't afford it right now :( I probably won't be ready to purchase a skimmer for 5-6 months I am afraid.

Hey Brent,

Not much has changed with my system in the last couple of months. Life has been pretty crazy and my 2nd daughter was just born May 30th! I did do a underwater video with my new Sport Camcorder if you are interested.

Awesome tank! Did I see a Anampses neoguinaicus swimming around? If so, where did you get him. I've never seen them locally and seldom online.
It is in fact a neoguinaicus. I work at Premier Fish and Reef part time (Aquarium maintenance company) and it was purchased from one of our wholesalers. I never seem them on the list so I had to swoop this one up!

Will do...I almost gave you a call this past weekend when I stopped by Aquatic Art. ;) Had some midday plans though and ended up rushing home with some new livestock. I'll give you a ring next time around.

How is the tank doing Kris? Any notable new success or changes resulting in good or bad? Are you still running cryptic on the sump, or was that your last tank?

Hey Chad,

Things have been difficult to be honest. In my plight trying to color up my browned out corals from my tank move I ended up bleaching out other corals and losing some. I was keeping my PO4 around .02-.04 and NO3 around .5-1 for months without change to my brown corals. So in my infinite wisdom I decided to bottom out my nutrients by increasing my vinegar dosing which caused some of my favorite colonies to bleach and STN :(

Needless to say I have almost stopped vinegar dosing (only dosing 15ml per day) and my corals are starting to color back up again.

I just converted my cryptic fuge back into a regular macro fuge. The cryptic was alright but it wasn't doing much, I also got tired of dosing phyto every day. Not to mention I really do like macros.

Other than that I am hoping to get my sump and skimmer upgraded in the next couple of months. I am looking at getting the Reef Octopus Diablo 250int. I strongly believe my current Lifereef Skimmer is just not able to keep up with my heavy bioload.

I have a few decent/good needlewheels sitting in my closet if you want to borrow one. They are of the ASM/Euroreef Sedra variety, but are for like the 200-300G tank size.

How are your N and P now that you quit dosing? I am so glad that things are coloring back up.

Those anoxi bacteria will start to grow and the NO3 will be down to zero in no time (well, maybe a few weeks). When this happens, the phosphate should start to drop too.

Well we had another baby! Say hello to Diablo :D

I hope to get Diablo broken into the family sometime this weekend. Of course this is all dependent on the sump. The sump I have now will not accomodate this beast so I picked one up from the shop. I need to plug a 1 1/4" drain line I wont be using and I need to make a stand for the skimmer since the partition wall is over 12" tall and this skimmer likes to sit in 6-6 1/2" of water. Honestly I am not super excited about the design and I will probably have a custom one built in the future.

The skimmer is rated for a 500gallon tank light load and 300 heavy, well how about 225 really heavy? I honestly think that my current lifereef skimmer cannot keep up with my bioload and heavy feeding so my system is (guessing) really high in DOC which I believe to be negatively impacting my corals.

This skimmer is going to come in handy, especially after my new additions. I recently put in a school of 8 chromis and a school of 8 dispar anthias. There is a lot of movement in my tank now, which I like.

More updates to come soon.

btw jda, thanks for the advice on reef central. I was really hesitant to let go of my carbon dosing since I have been doing it for so long. Bottoming out my nutrients was one of the worst things I have done in this hobby. I was keeping readable nutrients with success for quite a while but bottoming out was stupid. To my surprise my NO3/PO4 have not climbed since stopping and I have a overstocked underfiltered system. Corals are coming around again!

I will try to get a video up in the next week or so.

What are your N and P levels at now? Is the .1 and .02 in your sig line accurate?

I was looking at one of these DC Diablos online the other day... or a Vertex Alpha 300. I just have wide open sumps (no baffles) and I don't know how well either would work with the variable water levels. I have a old EuroReef 12" and a ASM G4 in there since the sedra pumps don't seem to care. I would really like to know how this goes...
